Just like any holiday, Valentine’s Day can sneak up on you. Before you know it, the day has arrived and you’re without so much as a card for your spouse.
As married couples, we have a lot going on. Working, feeding our families and taking care of children while attempting to fulfill our spouse’s needs. For some of us, Valentine’s Day really isn’t a big deal. It’s just another day.
But most of us give into the feeling of wanting to feel special on the 14th day of February.
Married couples can enjoy February 14th, or the day before and the day after because we have the gift of having a Valentine beyond one day in February.
So whether you celebrate it with the rest of the world on the actual day, or if you decide to do something special two days before, here are some fun ways to make your spouse feel loved:
Complete the Guide to the Perfect Gift by clicking here! How will you know if the gifts you’ve been giving your spouse are really the gifts they want unless you ask? Completing this form will help to take the guessing out of what to buy for your spouse for Valentine’s Day and every other holiday.
Date Night Jar: These are so much fun and super easy to make. Grab a mason jar, some Popsicle sticks and a permanent marker or a paint pen. Write one date night idea on each stick and fill the jar. Here’s an example!
A few ideas are bowling, hiking, camping, salsa dancing, mini golf, a picnic in the park, creating a painting and paddle boating.
Try to think outside the box and don’t be afraid to write down things you don’t really like to do that your spouse really enjoys doing. You can even get fancy and paint the jar and the sticks.
Give it to your spouse as a gift and pull a stick out each week or each month for an intentional date night!
A nice touch would be putting a card with it that explains that you want to be diligent in choosing a stick consistently. This gift is really one that keeps on giving!
Encouragement Jar: My amazing husband came up with this one a few years ago while we were courting and it was the most thoughtful gift he could have given me!
He tied little blue and white twine around green and blue pieces of paper with notes of encouragement written on them. He then presented them to me when I walked in the door. He was wearing a shirt of the same color scheme (my favorite colors, obviously) and had the biggest smile on his face. He really conquered Valentine’s Day that year!
Anywho, you can make one of these too! You can grab a mason jar or decorate a box and write an encouraging note or reasons why you love your spouse on popsicle sticks or pieces of paper. Make it creative by tying the papers closed with twine or string.
Tell your spouse to pull one every morning or when they’re feeling down. Your spouse knows you love them, but being able to pull a new reason out of the jar each day is such a beautiful reminder of how deep your love for them really is.
Coupon Book: This is another gift my awesome husband blessed me with one year. Now, that I think of it, he’s pretty good at Valentine’s Day. Create a book using string, twine or staples, paper or your computer. Type or write special things your spouse can exchange the coupon for. Some of the things my husband wrote were a free trip to the nail salon, a free foot massage, a cooked meal and a $50 shopping spree.
Be sure that if you present this gift, you’re willing to allow your spouse to redeem their coupons whenever they want!
Become a Baker or a Chef: I am the primary chef in our family and there is nothing better than not having to make dinner every now and then. If your spouse is the primary chef in the house, let them take a load off their feet and do the cooking for them. Or, grab the ingredients and make a meal together, preferably something new you both haven’t tasted before.
If you’re the world’s worst cook, don’t ruin the night by forcing yourself to prepare a meal. Hire a single friend that is a magician with food to cook a nice 3-course meal or pick one up from the restaurant you and your spouse love on the other side of town. Then, decorate the table with fine china and some candles. Viola! A gourmet dinner is served!
I also love making desserts for my husband on Valentine’s Day because we don’t usually eat dessert, so it’s a win for both of us. It doesn’t have to be a gourmet Chocolate Ganache cake, but something your spouse really likes.
If they like cookies, make their favorite kind. Don’t feel bad if you have to start with something store bought. My husband loves cheesecake, but I don’t always have time to make one, so some years I’ll pick up a plain one and dress it up with fresh strawberries. Dessert is dessert and it’s the thought that counts!
Surprise them at work: I personally think Valentine’s Day for most people is all about a public display of affection. For a lot women, they love to recieve gifts in front of everyone. So get her something she’ll love and send it to her while she’s at work, or better yet, deliver it to her yourself on your lunch break.
Married Couple Bonus: Ladies, it’s time to bring out that skimpy dress or lingerie your husband likes. This is also the perfect time to go shopping for a new outfit. Surprise your husband at the door or be waiting for him in the room. Fellas, be more playful with her on this special night. Be open to given a massage. Not one one of those quick back rubs, but a full body massage!
Enjoy this special night, be creative and let your love flourish!
